Treating Serrated Tussock by Spray Drone

Serrated Tussock has been a huge problem in Central West NSW for a long time now, and treating this big problem weed is slowly getting easier. I’ve had several land owners tell me it’s a shame it has no nutritional or financial value as it grows anywhere and everywhere!

Because Serrated tussock has the abillity to thrive in difficult spots, such as hills, creeks and overgrown blocks of land, landowners have great difficulty getting close enough to apply herbicide to the plant.

Boom sprayers are quite difficult to maneuvre over rough country and are at risk of damage. Hose reels are a great alternative, but if it’s a big job it will take a ridiculus amount of time to treat.

So have you ever considered the services of a Spray drone operator?

When treating Serrated Tussock with our DJI T40 Spray drone, we have many options and lets face it, these big flying machines where designed to tackle the most challenging terrain.

So what are the options?

If it’s a small job say 5 hectares with relatively easy access, Semi automatic is the way to go. We can turn up on site, get setup and knock over the job using either “A and B mode” or my favorite “Manual Plus”.

But what if it’s bigger than 5 hectares and has trees, and has taken over the whole hillside?

This is where we switch it up with mapping!

With DJI’s “Terra” Software, Tussock is manually located and can be blanket or spot sprayed. This option works well for smaller jobs, where clusters are close together.

For large infestations, we use Pix4D Fields to perform “Weed Mapping” which involves plant indexes and AI to precisely locate Serrated Tussock Plants at scale.

The selective Herbicide for Tussock is Flupropanate, and there are two types.

The most common is called “Tussock” which is a liquid concentrate. We generally apply Tussock at 2 litres per Hectare, with 50 litres of water.

The second type is in granule form, and is spread using our spreader attachment on our DJI T40. (Ahh yes it’s a spreader too!)
