The concept of weed mapping is a relatively new one! and there are many programs now days that can perform Green on Brown mapping, but for me Pix4D Fields is the one that made the biggest impression on me.
So how is Green on Brown weed mapping performed? well firstly the area to be treated needs to be mapped. The resolution needs to be high so flying lower than usual (60 to 80 metres above ground).
Resolution is key because the weeds need to be clearly visible.
As you can see in the video, you don’t need special multispectral imagery to perform Green on Brown. However RTK or PPK capability is a must, for precise location and application of chemical to weed clusters.
The video is for setting up a boom spray rig, with GPS guidance, but this method can be easily adapted to our T40 spray drone.
The process requires very different contrast and colours, which makes it excellent not only for fallow, but also identifying green weeds and bushes in lightly coloured grasses.
Green on Brown is being performed at scale not only in the Tractor world, but also with spray drones. This is exciting news for me because for drone spraying there are so many possibilities.
Instead of having to Blanket spray whole areas, the spraying operation can be reduced to just spot spraying where needed. This can be a huge saving in time also money, and it reduces the risk of weed resistance to chemicals.
